Boyo’s class locations and target demographic

Locations: Puli and Shinyi of Nantou; Shalu of Taichung; Zhudong, Jianshih, Wufeng, Hengshan of Hsinchu; Kouhu and Sihu of Yunlin; Laiyi of Pingtung and Huxi of Penghu; Datong of Yilan

Target demographic: underprivileged children in elementary or middle schools

Curriculum and goals

I. Main Goal: To provide afterschool assistance for underprivileged children

(1) Afterschool Tutoring:
First and foremost, We train local college students and members of ethnic minority communities to work at our tutoring centers. Our main focuses are on developing perseverance and fostering a love for learning. We aim to establish learning habits in our students by having them come to our evening classes for 2-3 hours each night from Monday to Friday. Focus is placed on English and mathematics, the subjects that typically cause students the most difficulty. Our secondary goal is watch the kids in a safe setting, versus them hanging out in the streets.
(2) We provide humanities and character development courses to help students solve their psychological and behavioral problems.

II. Secondary Goal: To support families in need
Boyo pays occasional visits to students’ homes, discussing with parents about how we can help them develop skills and abilities to build a better relationship with their children. Furthermore, our social workers make good use of social resources to solve problems, even transfer to other organizations if they are in emergency problems.
